The opportunity

As a Quality Engineer, you’ll be an embedded engineer, working alongside developers to prevent defects, build robust automation, and ensure quality is a shared outcome.

This is a hands-on, mid-level role for someone who already operates this way: an engineer who specialises in quality, not a tester adding automation as an afterthought.

This is a hybrid role based in Swindon, with the requirement to be in the office 3 days a week.

Benefits package:

  • Salary - up to £55,000
  • Bonus scheme - on target bonus - 10%
  • Pension scheme - contribute up to 5% of your salary and Openwork will match you and put in an extra 5%
  • Critical illness cover
  • Income protection
  • Death in service - 4x salary
  • 27 days holiday + bank holidays, with the opportunity to buy up to an additional 10 days
  • A range of other flexible benefits to include private medical insurance, dental insurance and much more.

Key responsibilities:

  • Owning and evolving the automated test suite across unit, integration, API, and end-to-end layers using the .NET stack
  • Embedding quality gates into CI/CD pipelines, including automated tests, coverage thresholds, and build-breaking checks
  • Championing shift-left quality practices, identifying risks, gaps, and ambiguities early in the delivery lifecycle
  • Building and maintaining observability across services — logging, alerting, and synthetic monitoring
  • Developing and applying agentic/AI-assisted testing approaches, ensuring safe and governed use
  • Defining and maintain the test strategy, balancing automation and exploratory testing
  • Collaborating with engineers to triage and resolve defects, identifying root causes
  • Contributing to performance and load testing where required
  • Supporting release decisions with objective, evidence-based quality insights
  • Collaborating across tribes to drive consistent quality standards and tooling

What will you need to succeed?

  • Proven experience as a Quality Engineer or Software Developer in Test, building automated test suites in live systems
  • Experience working as an embedded member of an engineering team (not a separate QA function)
  • Strong experience integrating quality gates into CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar)
  • Experience with observability tooling in cloud environments
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Strong .NET development skills, writing clean, maintainable test code
    • Experience with testing frameworks (xUnit, NUnit, MSTest) and mocking tools (Moq, NSubstitute)
    • Proven experience testing APIs and services (REST, automation tools such as RestSharp, Postman/Newman)
    • Practical experience with end-to-end automation tools (Playwright, Selenium)
    • CI/CD experience with pipeline optimisation and test execution strategies
    • Familiarity with observability tools (Application Insights, Azure Monitor)
    • Exposure to performance testing tools (k6, JMeter, NBomber)
  • Awareness of security testing principles (e.g. OWASP, SAST, dependency scanning)
